International Conference on Developments in Doctoral Education & Training Conference Proceedings

Douglas Halliday

Past Chair, UKCGE, Professor in Physics, University of Durham and Director of the Durham University Global Challenge Centre for Doctoral Training (2019–2022)

Gill Houston

Past Chair, UK Council for Graduate Education

The Council was delighted to welcome 144 delegates to the conference — including over 40 representatives from countries outside the UK, such as, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Macau, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Spain and the United States — together with plenary speakers from Australia, the United States and Germany

A recurring theme during the conference was the seemingly global adoption of structured doctoral training with its associated benefits of enhanced student experience especially through cohort models, improved completion rates and opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction. Evidence for these perceptions was strong in some areas and patchy in others and illustrated a wide range of models. Collaborative partnerships, initiated either by sponsors such as the research councils, or emerging organically from institutional relationships, proved a contested topic of interest to many delegates.
