Abstract
As the chapters in this book indicate, the push to help doctoral students publish is motivated by a number of different forces, including the strongly pragmatic need to help students advance their careers in a period of intense competition for jobs, both within and outside the university.
Scholarship juries, funding agencies and hiring committees all search for ways to divide applicants into the more or less desirable, and a list of publications identifies a promising newcomer. Although the imperative is undeniable, and the desire to help students is laudable, the dangers of rushing students into the public exposure of publication need to be considered.
